Slope Remediation, Mt Tomah, Blue Mountains, New South Wales
Client: Quickway
Scope: 900 Diameter Bored Piles with Temporary Casing, Capping Beam

Ormond Civil partnered with Quickway Constructions to address slope instability along Bells Line of Road in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Following a prolonged and heavy rainfall event, the embankment adjacent to the roadway experienced significant instability, characterized by large tension cracks and vertical displacement of up to 0.5 meters in the sealed shoulder and side fill.

The project required a robust and efficient solution to stabilize the slope, ensure the safety of the roadway, and prevent further movement. Ormond Civil delivered a comprehensive remediation plan, including the installation of 80 bored piles and the construction of a 150-meter-long capping beam to secure the slope and restore stability.

Scope of Works

Drill and Install 900 Diameter Bored Piles: Utilized temporary casing to ensure precision and stability during drilling. Executed in a narrow work area adjacent to contra-flow live traffic, requiring meticulous planning and coordination to maintain safety and minimize disruption.

Construction of 150m Long Capping Beam: Designed to tie the shoring system together and prevent further slope movement. Provided structural integrity and long-term stability to the remediated slope.

Key Challenges

Live Traffic: Work was conducted adjacent to contra-flow live traffic, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and traffic management plans.

Narrow Work Area: The confined space necessitated precise execution and efficient use of equipment.

Slope Instability: The presence of large tension cracks and vertical displacement demanded a robust and timely solution to prevent further deterioration.
